The Chinese have a proverb:
May you live in interesting times!
So my boss Chris pulls me into a conference room and lays out two large Gantt Charts. “This is my project list and plan for this year.” He says emphatically. I scan both sheets and notice that I am not assigned anything. “I have to complete everything on both pages; I have to hire contract resources, manage them, and complete all this work.” He says gesturing over the pages as if conjuring a spell. I quickly re-scan each and every entry and no, I’m not assigned to work on any of it. I look up to see Chris staring at me apparently waiting for dramatic effect. “If I’m going to get all this done, you’re going to have to take over all support of [our primary corporate system].” The enormity of “all support” sinks in for just a second or two when I quickly nod and say “Ok, who are my resources?” Chris laughs. “You get Dene 100%, Bill for 50% and Todd for 25%.” And with that exchange I began the process of assuming full control of all support issues and requests for the core business system for our multi-billion dollar company. I am as proud they have challenged me with this task, as I am challenged BY this task!
This will be a very interesting year indeed!
